I decided to write my blog the evolution of media and how its plays a role in the classroom. Over the past twenty years the evolution of media changed drastically. According to todays terms the original form of media or ‘old media’ is defined as books, newspapers, and magazines. If you think about what defines old media it is still current form of information we use; it’s just not as popular as the Internet or television. Since students have become more technology efficient, teachers are discovering new ways to combine all forms of media to bring into the classroom. Although, teachers are trying harder than ever to get students involved in the classroom it’s becoming extremely difficult to incorporate old media. Old media is holding back the potential success of students; it limits working with other students and teamwork within the classroom setting. Not allowing students to use new media does not enable them to take full advantages of the current resources available. I think that limiting the amount of new media students are allowed to use is holding them back from the information technology communication revolution going on in todays society. Restricting students also does not allow them to advance with the changes in the industry that will be required in the global marketplace.
Although by now I’m sure you can guess my opinion on the media revolution and its role in the classroom, I do want you to be aware of both the pros and cons. Newer media such as the Internet allows students unlimited amount of resources of all kinds and brings about opportunities for students to participate in different types of online educational programs and discussion boards. Students have the ability to access information for research paper without the hassle of going to the library to check out a resource book because of today’s media industry almost everything is available online. I feel that FSU being a media friendly school makes everything easier. Blackboard is my savior; everything is organized by class and then by content, allowing navigating the site to be very easy. From my experience, I absolutely love it both my math and microeconomics teachers use online resources and it makes everything a million times easier to do the work in one organized place and ask a specific question if I am having trouble on something. As well, students with disabilities have access to tools that help them reach their educational goals. The few disadvantages that are occurring in today’s classrooms are that there is not ready access to computers for students in the classroom or the teacher does not have the appropriate training for a specific application.
One way educators are attempting to move towards more technology friendly atmosphere is having them incorporate social media into their curriculum. Social media is enormously popular among todays young generation. “Social media are web-based technologies that transform and broadcast media monologues into social media dialogues.” They allow the integration of current technology and social communication. As well, this encourages student to become involved with their peers and learn how to interact with one another. It becomes exciting for educators to give their student a challenge of interacting with their peers by using a form of technology they are familiar with. Some social media examples are Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. However, this can arouse problems for the teachers since many of the sites are blocked because of a filter from the school district. School districts deem the sites as inappropriate for children and want to sensor what they can access in school.
With today’s current society being extremely technology efficient, teachers requiring old media resources poses a challenge to many students. Should old media resources still be required as a mandatory resource? Or should it be all technology friendly sources? Do you think incorporating old media is holding back today’s current students? Should we make the move to only new media? Should we still incorporate old media within the class?

It is always a good feeling to go to the library, check out a book, and use it for a research paper. One might say this is the "Right way," or "Only way," to do it, but that is not necessarily true. I have used Google Books many times in research papers successfully. I think books should still be incorporated into everyday college life, but the internet is a great thing and I think we should still use it in addition to old school media.
ReplyDeleteOld media should be incorporated in research based assignments but the reality is that you can pretty much find all the information online. People type up books, and magazines are being scanned so technically everything is online.
ReplyDeleteI think that people feel like they have to choose between what type of media they want to use. Society makes people feel like they can either be a book worm or an internet addict, but why can’t we have some middle ground between them? The internet is not meant to replace “old media”, but rather be an addition to it. Books are not outdated like everyone thinks; they still have life in them. Both the internet and books have pros and cons to them that should not be overlooked. Yes, the internet is more convenient, but if we depend of it and something happens to inhibit our use of it, then we would be completely lost. If for instance, we were working on a research paper and the power went out, then what would we do? We should be able to easily turn to the power of books without a great effort. But for someone who is bred in the internet, this dilemma could be detrimental. People misinterpret both the benefit and the harm that being bred in the internet causes. The internet should be used as a supplementary resource instead of replacing a former one.
ReplyDeleteThere is just something about going to the library that alwaya puts me at ease, but it is so much easier to look at a book nonlinear instead of taking the time to go to the library. Today, we are busier than ever and have easy and convenient access to old media on new media has allowed us to become even busier. It is great to still in corporate old media, but with the amount of research papers that students receive at one time, technology friendly classrooms would've helpful.
ReplyDeleteI think requiring old media sources should never be stopped. What does "old media" even mean? These sources, such as books and encyclopedias, contain a plethora of information that simply cannot be found on the internet. Yes, it does make finding sources for research papers more difficult. But think about this: how easy is it for us to write papers these days anyway? All we have to do is type it up and print it out from our computers. Taking an extra hour or two to go to the library and find a book on your topic does absolutely no harm. Eliminating "old media" is an awful idea in my opinion. "Old media" is history; it will always be important to include.
ReplyDeleteI think that there should be an increase in the amount of technology used in classrooms. It does make it easier to do research and homework when you are able to do them from your laptop or some other form of technology. I also think that blackboard is a great thing. It helps me stay on top of things and lets me know about upcoming assignments and due dates. However I also think that it is good to use books as well. Some people may not have access to media technology and it may be easier for them to use old media such as books and magazines.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is important to have a little bit of both medias in the world. I do like that technology is advancing and it makes it ten times easier to find information and keep up with how fast the world is evolving. I also think it is important to remember we do have millions of books that preserve our history and it is always a good thing to have to go and check out a book to pull up information. I do like how advanced the classrooms are getting and how all of our homework and class information can be found online. Say we miss a class, all of the information is there to help us so we do not fall behind. I do think it is important that if technology is going to be used in class both the teacher and the students have to be on the same level. Many times i find that the students know more about technology than the teachers do.
ReplyDeleteWhat you've said may be true but why do you think Old Media is still required? There is a reason that teachers want you to take the time to find books and publications in tangible format. There are several reasons why regardless of the type of publication, because it's in a tangible format it's more likely to be more developed. First off, nearly everything published in a book has undergone extensive editing. This will ensure that what you are reading is actually what the author intended for you to read, without strong possibilities of errors in both theme and structure.
ReplyDeleteOn the other end of the argument, it is impractical for teachers to assign papers and other projects without considering the repercussions of requiring tangible sources. In todays fast paced world, why are we expected to complete a larger work load in less amount of time when we can't use the resources that allow these larger work loads? In the past, we had time to read and think about the assignments given. With the cramming of these assignments, we try our best just to complete everything on time as fast as we can without absorbing the material.
Technology should be up to date in my opinion. Its hard enough to understand one program, but when you have different programs going everywhere that makes it even more difficult. Also things need to be done at a quicker pace and its very difficult to go at a quick pace when you have several different programs going on at the same time and getting confused with them as well.Technology friendly classrooms are the way to go.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that books have been outdated. Usually when a teacher requires some sort of source it’s up to us but the first thing we think about it the internet. Books aren’t convenient and that’s why we love the internet so much. Everything we need is at our fingertips, or just a click away. I do think that old media sources shouldn’t be required but having a book to look at may be more helpful. I know that if I were to chose from having a physical text book to read from or just using an ebook bought offline, I would much rather look at the text book in front of me instead of just a screen.
ReplyDeleteI do think that some sources are outdated. For example, the newspaper. Its still around, yes, but everyone can just look it up on the internet. Who needs to waste paper when we can just upload articles and the news through a website? They’re just as portable because their on our phones, and their more easily transportable.
When writing a paper i see no reason for there to be mandatory "old media" resources, unless you are writing a paper in which there are no "new media" resources or a paper on a book. The library is a huge pain in the ass in which to do research and not even close to as efficient as doing online research. Teachers will argue that the sources online aren't reliable and i'll agree that some of them aren't, but at the same time a lot of them are very reliable. As stated before if the paper is on a book or doesn't have any "new media" resources then yes you'll have to refer back to "old media" resources. "Old media" will never die as it is an extremely reliable source so no we shouldn't make the move to only "new media" unless we go back and scan every book online. That would be the ideal. "Old media" should still be incorporated in the class room, but it is best to try to find the sources online rather than having everyone buy a book or have to lug it around to class.

ReplyDeleteI think old media should still be required as a mandatory source. Even though the internet makes it easy for students to research topics and instantaneously get the information they are looking for, books and newspapers and magazines all hold important information as well. Books were written by experts and then are checked and edited before being published so they are trustworthy sources. But, nowadays just about anyone can make a website and write whatever they want on it. I still use the internet for most of my sources when writing papers but the sites must be checked so you know the information is correct. Even though using "old media" may be outdated, it is still an important source and in my opinion all students should be forced to write a paper using "old media" as their only sources. It is good practice, and while it may not be as accessible as "new media" there is important information that everyone can find. "Old media" is not holding back the class, both "old and new media" should have a part in the classroom. Making a change to just one or the other would be too extreme, and learning how to use both types of sources is something I believe everyone should know.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that in today's society new media helps students engage more in the classroom, I think that old media should be upheld as well. While the internet is fast, easy, and effective, the information is not very reliable. With a site like "Wikipedia," as an example, people can easily misguide you on the internet. With books, encyclopedias, and newspapers, the information is much more reliable. Plus, who wants to spend any more time on technology then we already do?
ReplyDeleteI believe that we should keep "old" media. Students main media today is through t.v. or internet and you cant always believe what people always say on the internet or t.v. I look at "old" media books and criticism that very intelligent people have written and would not be around today if it wasn't thought of as a great source of information.
ReplyDeleteI think that all sources should be technology friendly and that you shouldn't have to go find a book to use on research. I think this way because who has time to go to a library to study any more when you can find all the information you need, on the computer. Even most books are online as well now!!
ReplyDeletei believe that teachers do require to many requirements that are difficult to get my hands on. in their defense though i believe that we should not forget about those things that are not modern technology. i believe that something should be done to have everything accessible through media. it is the way of the world now, it is time to accept change and move forward with it.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important for students to learn on multiple media sources. And sometimes the most up-to-date, futuristic way yo learn is not always the most effective. Teachers and the classroom should have new technology and implement it, but there must be a balance. Students should not always rely on the internet and use books and libraries still.
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure old media resources should still be mandatory when writing a research paper but I definitely disagree that incorporating old media into class rooms is holding back today’s students. I understand the convenience of using the internet to gather information but magazines, books, and newspapers are still relevant and printed daily. How is old media holding back my potential success? Am I the only one sick and tired of relying on my phone and Facebook to communicate? Sick and tired of a friend getting mad because I neglect to text back for a few hours? I can’t help but think there is going to be negative outcomes from this media/technology revolution. New technology is great and all but is technology taking over? One of the most relaxing things for me is picking up a great book or flipping through a magazine looking at its pictures and reading the different articles inside. Moving strictly to new media reminds me of the book Fahrenheit 451 and makes me a little uncomfortable. I still like to hold a book in my hands, not a kindle. I like to talk face to face, not using emoticons through text messages. I enjoy going to the library and taking the time to get up and do something rather than sit at my computer for hours. I agree the internet and other new media sources are more convenient and are updated and used more frequently but that does not mean old media should be considered irrelevant and useless.
ReplyDeleteI think they should be an option, but not a requirement. Give a student the option of using a book, but also give him the option of finding the same book online in ebook form. Personally, I find being forced to check out book from libraries to be annoying and a waste of time. Most, if not all, of the information that it contains is probably somewhere online.
ReplyDeleteI am a strong supporter of books, so I must always vote for "old media" in topics such as this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a person look things up in a book in the library - yes, it is much longer and much more annoying, but the skill to find and locate needed information would be exercised. Now, I am not saying that technology is bad - it is absolutely fantastic - but that does not mean that everything else is useless.
ReplyDeleteWith today’s current society being extremely technology efficient, teachers requiring old media resources poses a challenge to many students. Should old media resources still be required as a mandatory resource? Or should it be all technology friendly sources? Do you think incorporating old media is holding back today’s current students? Should we make the move to only new media? Should we still incorporate old media within the class?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, using "old media" is always beneficial because of the accurate information that it can contain. Using sources that are all technology based might be more time efficient but not as good in quality as books and such. Although not all technology based sources are rubbish, a lot of it is, and using only technology sources can create a lot of confusion in if the information is right or wrong. Therefore, old media should still be incorporated in class.
I believe that we should always use old media. We are very dependent on computers and sadly computers crash and malfunction while books will always have the information unless a huge storm comes and destroys every edition of that book. But at the same time I do believe that students should be very nifty with new technology. Old media is not holding today’s students at all unless teachers are strictly prohibiting the use of new media. Old media should still be incorporated every now and then in a classroom.
