Essay number two has us choosing a topic that we want to learn more about. This is more than likely a topic that you have a particular interest in. Most people have a certain topic that they enjoy learning about whether you are reading, researching, or just talking about the subject with someone. This topic for me has been cars, boats, and pretty much anything that is mechanically intriguing since before I can remember. Everyone has a hobby or an interest that they want to learn more about so I want to know what your special interest is. What can you stay up reading about until you fall asleep on your keyboard because you just can’t get enough of it. What makes you want to keep reading? This can be anything from shopping to sports.
Ever since I was thirteen I’ve been building and working on cars, engines, and boats with my dad. We built my first car together starting when I was fourteen. I spent most of my weekends at our buddies race shop working on my car and helping out around the shop on other projects. It was just what I loved to doing. When I wasn’t at the shop working I was at home doing research reading up on other people working no their projects. Obviously I made time for friends as well but from time to time I got a little carried away with my projects. I loved learning about cars and engines and got to spend quality time with my dad while I did it. Not to mention it kept me out of trouble.

The next big project we started was a 1990 “foxbody” mustang that we turned into a drag car. We built the engine together, as well as the car. It was a blast and I learned a bunch while doing it.
The last big project that my dad and I built before I left for FSU was an airboat. I have been brought up around airboats all my life and have hunted since I was ten. So it wasn’t out of the ‘norm’ but we had never built an airboat by ourselves before. We wanted this boat to be like a racecar compared to the other airboat we have so we made the decision to build a certain style hull and started making phone calls to get the material. Once we got the material it started to come together piece by piece on the weekends and a few weeknights. Once the hull was done we worked with a guy to help us with the rest of the boat. From the beginning of the project until we finished it it took about 11 months. It came out better than my dad and I could have ever hoped and we went on to win the Palm Beach Airboat show with it.

So I want to know what inspires you? What can you read about for hours at end and still be completely consumed in the topic? Who got you interested in this topic and how?
I am not exactly inspired by anything but the people around me. I want to succeed and be wealthy. I just don't have anything I am completely in love with. I like to party and hang with friends. Neither of which I see leading me to my goals. So i hope to be inspired soon. P.S. that airboat looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, most anything can inspire me --it just depends on the time inspiration hits. But, for the sake of the other questions, I would have to say history. There are certain parts of history that I absolutely adore, such as the Victorian era that can be coupled up with the Wild West era, where Steampunk became apparent and alive.
ReplyDeleteI actually think I just happened upon my interests, instead of having someone introduce them to me.
My answer to these questions is simple. There really only are a few things that I could read for hours. Excluding my two-week-long “only read the Hunger Games” stint, I’m not much of a reader. There is, however, something that can get me reading: any nonfiction book or journal of an adventure. Adrift, a nonfiction novel written by the man to survive the longest time solo lost at sea, was the first book that got me hooked. My mom bought me books on whitewater boating and hiking as my interest in those activities grew over the years. I can sit down for hours with a National Geographic magazine, reading about people’s adventurous and dangerous feats around the world.
ReplyDeleteI love reading things about health. I could sit down and read for hours about a new exercise and what new thing out there is going to help you stay alive and well for as long as possible. I don’t like reading things that are vague and just talk about nutrition and say “eat healthy and work out twice a week”. I am more interested in the new scientific studies that tell us what types of things are good for us, what it does, and how it affects you. Reading about new ideas are interesting and to see our nation evolve and figure out the different ways to improve your health and preserve our body is interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteI am really not sure what I am inspired about specifically. The books I read are about action and adventure if reading for leisure. However if I had the time, I would read books about investigative work ranging from historical to crime. And I'm not really sure who and how I got into this subject or material, but once I found it, I have been hooked since.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy reading topics about human development (puberty, sex, hormones, gender roles). I have never read anything boring under the topic human development. It's interesting and I am learning new things, whether its about the human body or what to do and not to do on a date. My favorite two magazines are Seventeen and Cosmopolitan. Both of those magazines are filled with goodies! I am not really sure what inspired me to read material such as human development.
ReplyDeleteThere are many things that interest me, but there are two topics that really peak my interest: forensic science and Greco-Roman mythology. I know those are really different topics, but I think they capture both my curious side and my intellectual side. I got interested in Greco-Roman mythology in seventh grade when we had to read a mythology book. I could not stop reading any mythology book I could get my hands on and when the Percy Jackson series came out, I was so excited because it was mythology in real life. I will spend hours upon hours researching stories, profiles and even artwork of all the gods, goddesses and heroes because they are so interesting to me. I became interested in forensic science when during my senior year of high school I took a forensics class as my elective and I absolutely loved it! We had a woman from the FDLE come in and teach us how to properly take fingerprints, and we had a toxicologist come in and tell us when he’s needed and what type of work he does. We talked about everything from hair and fibers to ballistics to profiling to blood spatter. Both forensics and mythology are my two favorite topics to research and I could never stop researching them because they are just that interesting.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in anything that has to do with the water. Whether its fishing, boating, surfing, or paddleboarding, I can sit down and read an article for hours. I grew up in a small town on the beach, so I have been around water my entire life. Also my family has owned a charter fishing business since before I was born. I even work at a marina during the summer. I have seen and experienced just about anything and everything that goes on around the water and yet everytime I see an article about something that has to do with the water I can't help but to read it.
ReplyDeletei am interested in history. i find that past events and war strategies are most interesting. but the outdoors is where my real interest lies. give me a field and stream and I'm set for awhile. i have always hunted and fished ever since i can remember and that what i enjoy to read about.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in world news and current events, I can read about reports of foreign relations between the United States and other nations. This is because I enjoy thinking about what our next move will be in foreign policy and national defense. I plan to serve in the military so I always thought that being knowledgeable about other countries will help me know where and what I will be doing if I ever get deployed.
ReplyDeleteI have not really had a hobby or something that interests me until very recently. I just began planning a 3 week backpacking trip through Europe with my boyfriend and two friends. I have never been to Europe so I am beyond excited. I find myself spending hours on end researching places to go and planning transportation via eurail. I spend hours looking up travel books and looking up all the different places that we can go visit. I look up the history and other places we can spend some time. I turn on my computer to do homework but i end up finding myself looking up something else for my trip.
ReplyDeleteTopics I am usually interested in reading are those that are nonfiction dramatic pieces and human development. I am usually drawn to books that are based on true stories and are undergoing some kind of dramatic event. For example, “A Child Called It” was a book based on the abuse a man had to face as a child. These books tend to be very powerful and moving pieces that I can never seem to put down. “The Kite Runner” was another one of my favorites. I like books that show a character going through a traumatic obstacle in their life whether it be drugs, abuse, rape, disorders etc.
ReplyDeleteHuman Development is not only an interesting topic, but there’s always something new I am learning about. I love reading about it and I love speaking about it. It can be a touchy subject, but I am completely comfortable with discussing it. I am also a fan of Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazine and can read that over and over. As for what inspires me, I guess I can say that I inspire myself. My opinion is the only one that matters and I motivate myself to be the best I can be.
I love reading about anything related to athletics or exercising. Particularly, I really enjoy baseball. Whenever I have free time, I usually get on the internet and look up baseball stats, news about trades, rumors, and details on games and teams. To me the sport is really underrated. Most people find it "boring" and "slow", but to me it's fascinating to explore all of the factors that come into play in just one game.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading topics that are related to sports. I grew up around all sorts of sports and have played many of them. Today I do not play any sports competitively, except for intramurals, but I like keeping up with what all is going on in the world of sports. Everday I go on ESPN.com to see whats new to the day, I guess it's just become a habit of mine to check ESPN and to read articles.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy sports and physical fitness. Anything pertaining to how he body works I'm all ears. Its amazing how strong the human body is and what needs to be done to make it athletic as possible, there are so many different ways to be healthy and so many different reasons why people are and arent healthy, its just endless how many new things one can learn.
ReplyDeleteI love reading about music and musicians. I am always in search of new music and artist to become obsessed with. I am an avid user of stumble upon and i always choose to stumble on the music tab because it keeps me up to date on whats hot and whats not anymore.
ReplyDeleteI am inspired by a lot of things, but music is one of my main interests. I love listening to my favorite musicians whenever I am doing work or going to class or just hanging out in my apartment. I am inspired by music because it is art and my favorite artists are the ones that write lyrics that are like poetry and speak to me. Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes write beautiful songs and I never want to shut off their music. I also love soundtracks from movies have symphonies, and usually I play those while I am writing papers because that inspires me and I don't start typing the lyrics to the song instead of whatever subject I am writing about. My mom loved to show my sisters and I music from all genres and times, and as I've grown up I have been exploring new ones as well and I really enjoy discovering new artists that I love.
ReplyDeleteI am in a completely amazing relationship with clothes and shoes. My mom started sewing when I was in about fourth grade, she let me sketch out what I wanted and then poof there it was. It was amazing to see my ideas come to life and ever since then I have been sickly obsessed. I go through more magazines than anyone I know, I love seeing new creative things. My love of fashion has inspired me to make things myself. I paint and sew my own designs to create things that I want to wear.
ReplyDeleteWhat really inspires me is thinking of new ideas, whether that be a story for a book I want to write or a business idea for a bar. Really, I want my future to be us spastic as possible. I don't want to live the normal American suburban life. Honestly, if I had the choice I would be a nomad and roam around the world. Knowing that my life will someday be much more of an adventure drives me to jump through the loops my parents and our country alike set for our youth.
ReplyDeleteI love you dedication to building motorized machines. It seems like it's a really big passion of yours and being that my step-dads a mechanic, I could really relate to how rewarding building something of your own actually is.
What really inspires me is seeing new places. I've always been fascinated with the world and its environment. I like learning about animal behavior, pretty much anything you'd find on Animal Planet. That's the reason why my topic will deal with traveling, because one day, I hope, when I'm wealthy enough to travel the world, I plan to spend a lot of time traveling and visiting the places I research about in my essay.
ReplyDeleteLearning new things in science has always inspired me, thats why I am an environmental science major now. Every time I learned a new fact about an ecosystem it intrigued me to learn more. As well, history is fascinating to me especially the European, I have become fascinated with the Tudor Dynasty and could read about it for days. For the science aspect, my high school environmental program teacher hooked me into that world in 9th grade and i have been intrigued ever since.
ReplyDeleteSports is probably on of the only things that I really enjoying aobout. I can spend hours looking for information to stay on top of evrything that is happening in the sports world. My dad is the one that got me so interested in sport, he is a huge sports fan and growing up I would sit down and watch sports with him.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really difficult question to answer. As a person with an open mind, I am inspired by many things daily. But if I were to truly pick a specific topic, I would have to say that I am passionate about dance. While people spend the average ticket price to see a show, they miss out on what dance truly is all about: the process. Dance is about finding your voice and having the freedom to express it. It's about digging further and further into an idea until you possibly can't think anymore. It's about opening your heart and mind to endless possibilities. Dance is not a way to escape, but a place to let go. Dance is what truly inspires me. It's my life.
ReplyDeleteHunting and outdoors activities interest me most. I can go through all kinds of hunting and outdoorsman magazines in a day if I could. I have always liked the outdoors and it started at a young age. I would visit family in West Virginia who lived out in the middle of nowhere of the country. I always enjoyed walking the land with my dad, uncle, and cousins who then got me interested in hunting.
ReplyDeleteMy topic that I am writing for my paper is the Voice and Vocal Pedagogy. I want to know how it works and what mechanisms control pitch and volume and how opera singers can belt notes out over orchestral accompaniment. When the attendance question came to me last week, "What is your dream job," or something along those lines, I responded with, "Opera Singer," because I think it is simply amazing how they are able to produce such sounds.
ReplyDeleteWhat inspires me most are the success stories of people. Whether it be the story of a person overcoming a disability or a story of "rags to riches" people inspire to continue on my personal pursuits. When ever I hear a story about someone overcoming an obstacle that would be debilitating to most I figure why can't I do it? If nothing else peoples stories put me in my place, If a man who lost both his legs can run a marathon, then I should be able to surpass the minor obstacles of my life as a college student.
ReplyDeleteAs with you, I love motorsports. I can spend all day looking at cars, engines, how they work, new models, pretty much everything. My dad got me into motorsports when I was little when he first bought me my first dirt bike. Ever since then I have always been real into everything and anything involved in motors and sports in general.
ReplyDeleteA topic that I could read about for hours is sports. From talking stats to just reading reports of games, it always keeps me interested. I think what first got me into it was the fact that I got to grow up in Chicago, which is a huge sports city. The city is filled with crazy die hard Chicago Bears fans. It is would be nice to have a job up there with one of the teams.
ReplyDeleteI love reading about philosophy and the reasoning and theories of why we do the things we do. I like to read about human behaviors and their interactions with others. I think, for my paper,I will write a paper on stereotypes and why it is that certain stereotypes exist and what cause people to follow these stereotypes. For me, understanding human behavior is fascinating.
ReplyDeleteI have many hobbies, but my main passion lies within dancing. I could read or watch books and videos for hours on end without losing interest. Something about the different way to express one's self captivates me. No particular person got me hooked on dancing except myself. I would watch videos on youtube and think it was an awesome thing to pursue. Next thing I knew, i spent countless hours on youtube teaching myself how to dance.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of things that I can get read about and get lost in. Anything related to athletic training in any way shape or form will keep me occupied forever. I personally love learning things, and will learn anything that someone is willing to teach me. I also love learning how things are made. I love sports as well so I read a lot about my favorite teams. I am kind of all over the place when it comes to interests and hobbies. My friends would say i know way too many random facts but that is because I can stay up reading random things about pretty much everything all night, and i do.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t take much to inspire me. Some people can only read a book when it is interesting to them. Fortunately for me the topic never turns me away. Books that I find most interesting are books on philosophy. I like reading these old important texts to get a glimpse of how life used to be and how the smartest perceived it.
ReplyDeleteIf it is obvious that a teacher wants to help me be successful in their class and they are passionate about what they are teach, then I am more inclined to work hard to impress the teacher and make good grades. I could read historical fiction for hours, i'm such a nerd but i think it is so cool to be put in a fictional character's shoes in a historical event. I'm not exactly sure where i adopted this love but i have to think my parents had something to do with it; they always made sure i had plenty of books to read by either taking my brother and I to the library weekly or buying them for us.
ReplyDeleteI am completely interested in behavioral patterns. I love understanding and finding out why people do the things they do, I could spend all day reading, observing and asking people questions about this. I think it is fascinating to find out why people are the way they are and why they act the way they act, it is like a game.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested completley in books about modern day life. Just stories about what happens in someones life and stories. For example my favorite book is something blue and it is a sequel to a movie that i saw and i read the book in 1 day because at the end of the movie it said.. to be continued so i had to read it!
ReplyDeleteI really don't know exactly what I love to learn about specifically. I love learning just about anything that comes to my mind. I could be sitting at the dinner table and then wonder "Why is it called Milk?" "Were there other possibilities for a name of an opaque white drink?" In all honesty I like learning about things that many people would rather not care for like why snails secrete mucus or why Jewel wasps can't see through the color red. I just like learning about unusual things that make me stand out from the rest of the world.
