My favorite movie, which led to a series of movies, is Dirty Harry. A rough movie about an investigator named Harry Callahan working in San Francisco in the early 1970’s. He is notorious known on the force as Dirty Harry for a number of reasons such as how he goes outside the lines of the law, or his relations with women. He carries with him at all times a Smith & Wesson .44 magnum. It is a large, powerful handgun unlike any other at the time.
The movie opens with a man using a high-powered rifle to murder a woman swimming in a pool on top of a building. Later, a note is sent to the police by the self-named killer, Scorpio, demanding $100,000 or more killings will come. Harry is put on the case and throughout the movie stops all forms of crime while chasing down Scorpio. He at times breaks the law in order to provide justice and security for the people of San Francisco. He ultimately brings down Scorpio illegally, and simply tosses away his badge, knowing he would at least go down for the right reasons.
These movies are by far my favorite movies because of the character portrayed and the actor playing the role, Clint Eastwood. It would be safe to claim that Eastwood is a conservative actor. Most people today remember him best for his role in Gran Torino. He played the no nonsense old guy that longed for the days of manners and a safe neighborhood. Eastwood made his name, and a cult following, for his roles in “spaghetti westerns” such as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. These westerns earned their name for being filmed in Italy.
Back to the subject of Eastwood, he remains to be my favorite actor not only for his ability and the roles he plays, but what he stands for in every movie he acts or directs in. He always takes a stance for justice and patriotism, and if the movie he has a role in has nothing to do with the two, then he always plays the good guy. He may be the gun wielding man with no name providing safety for a small town, or the rough boxing coach that generously shares his knowledge with an up and coming female boxer. Even with the long career he has yet to end after over 40 years, it is hard to find one movie out of the over 40 he has had a role in that he doesn’t take on those roles or stances.
As left leaning, and crazy some of the people in Hollywood get, it’s refreshing to have an actor of Eastwood’s caliber with a stable head on his shoulders. He never makes a scene or runs his mouth for tabloids to jump all over. He keeps to himself and causes no controversies. I couldn’t tell you what his political preferences are and I could care less. He does not use it to get attention or make a name for himself. Eastwood simply lets his acting do the talking and tries his best to simply be a normal person off camera. That trait is what appeals greatly to me and a lot of people in Hollywood should take note of.
It would be safe to say that the actor greatly helps make a movie great for me. Both how they behave on and off the screen. Someone who I can be proud to claim as someone I look up to. So what part of a movie helps make a movie from just being good, to being your all time favorite? Is it also the actor? Director? Or is there simply a favorite actor you want to talk about? Maybe it’s the cool lines that will be remembered and recreated for moviegoers to come… above are some from Clint.
I'm not sure what my favorite movie is. However i think a great movie depends on who you are talking to. Great films have more than just a strong actor or director. It takes the combination of many different aspects to create a memorable feature film.
ReplyDeleteI cannot pinpoint what my all-time favorite movie is. I have very many favorites, but they all differ in theme, style, and genre. I think my "favorite" really depends on what mood I'm in. Most of my favorites are my favorites because of the message or the outcome of the movie. Also, I like a lot of movies if they can make me laugh, cry, or emotionally move me. Sometimes, though, I enjoy lighthearted cartoon Disney movies!
ReplyDeleteI don't have one particular favorite movie, but I love comedies. I really like movies with actors such as Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler in them. They are some of the most hilarious actors I have ever seen and I never get tired of watching movies that they are actors in. I think that any movie, whether it's a comedy or an action film, has to have a combination of good actors, directors, and writers in order to make it good. A movie wouldn't be good at all if it had good actors and horrible storyline, or a great script with inexperienced actors.
ReplyDeleteI do not know what my favorite movie of all time are, but I really like the movies Titanic and Avatar. I think the director and the actors have a huge part in making something memorable and someone's favorite movie of all time. In these two movies, the director is James Cameron and he has received awards for Best Director. In each of these movies, he used techniques that were uncommon at the time of release. I think he creativity in revealing the story to an audience is what captivates us. The actors also help by developing the characters into his vision.
ReplyDeleteMy ultimate favorite movie would definitely be The Phantom of the Opera. There are many different aspects of this movie that make it my favorite. I love the songs, and the dancing and their wardrobe budget must have been out of this world. But I would have to say that the main reason why I love this movie is the emotional part of it that leaves a lasting impression on me. Gerard Butler plays the mysterious Phantom, who has known nothing but a life of solitude and abuse due to his deformed appearance. He becomes the voice coach of the young soprano Christine Daae under the surname the “Angel of Music”. When he is unable to hide his love for her any longer, he tries to woo her with his music, but he is rejected by her for her childhood sweetheart Raoul. Gerard does a phenomenal job of displaying his emotions of both love and pain and one can’t help but cry along with him as his love sails off with her lover. This movie is truly beautiful, and wonderfully done. And even though I never cry in movies, this is the one movie that never fails to bring me to tears.
ReplyDeleteTo me, a good movie has a great cast and good sense of explaining the story. If the movie has a terrible cast, it just makes the movie look crummy. Also, if the story is chopping and hard to follow, I never enjoy it. I just saw the Hunger Games and it really frustrated me because the story line of the book was so perfect and the movie rushed every important part.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that a good movie has to have an exceptional story line. Even though actors are important, I have seen some pretty underground, mediocre actors pull off a great role in movies. The plot is definitely what drives the story, and keeps me entertained. I hate when 20 different movies have the same exact plot and don't bring anything new to the table. Perfect example is the overrated plot of the great coach who takes a team of slackers into a championship. I can name at least 30 movies with that plot. That crap is boring and makes me pass out instead of entertaining me.
ReplyDeleteEternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. With all the themes it brings into play, it's unlike anything I've seen before. Not only is it completely outside the box but it makes you think about your life in Jim Carry's shoes. It was so easy for me to relate. At the end of the movie I cherished times I had with old relationships, even if they were terrible at times. More so, the cinematography was excellent and left me begging for more. Honestly, I don't think actors can save a movie that wasn't done properly. Eternal Sunshine has all the qualities from sound, video, acting, etc. to make it worth while.
ReplyDeleteBand of brothers i one of my all time favorite movies. The way the main character, an army officer in world war II, leads his men to find a Private and bring him home. The main character shows valuable leadership qualities that is needed to lead men into battle. Tom Hanks, the main character makes the movie and although it is way over played on television it still remains a classic to me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie of all time is the Gladiator. Every aspect of that movie sums up perfection in the form of film. It is not only a movie, but a work of art. The script, directing, actors, filming, development; there is no other way to put it than attained perfection.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie or movies are cartoons, but i think the key to making a good movie is having a very strong cast as well as director and writers. There are obviously more components that go into making a great movie but to me those are the most important. You want a well written movie that will keep you interested and make you fall in love with the characters. The actors should be able to really bring these characters to life and make the audience believe that these are real people. The director has to be able to bring the entire movie and vision to life and making it seem realistic, even if the concept is something totally out of the realm of possibilities, like something like harry potter. I think these are some of the key components that make up a great film.
ReplyDeleteI don’t particularly have a favorite movie or a favorite actress but I think its safe to say that I pretty much enjoy all comedy’s. I think the lines are what make a movie. I know that in movies like Step Brothers and Anchorman, Will Ferrel comes up with his lines on the spot. During the bloopers he says several different things before they get the one that sounds the best. Their speratic and random and that’s what makes them funny.
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure why but I don’t have a favorite movie. There are several movies which I enjoy more than others but I don’t have a favorite. Usually the movies I find myself enjoying more are comedy or action movies. I love history so I’m always down for some historical fiction but I also enjoy a good laugh.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie is Remember the Titans and I love this movie because the acting is great and how the movie is based on a true story, not to mention the soundtrack is really good. Also the director does a great job in building suspense throughout the movie which also is another reason why I like the movie so much.
ReplyDeleteMy all time favorite movie is SuperStar. However, lately I have been classifying a lot of movies as my favorite. I think what makes a movie awesome is the actors for one and two the plot. If a movie has a powerful plot, more than likely it will become my "new" favorite movie.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie of all time is Mean Girls. The comedy and humor that underly the typical high school drama is my absolute favorite aspect of the movie. The different stereotypical relationships between the other students, teachers, and staff are what eery person imagines as that typical high school. ALos, they way all the actors portray their characters is extremely comical, which I fins hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI think that the actors have to be the changing argument because if they are good looking or not or if their good at acting then people will like it. If the audience sees commercials and they recognize the actor or actress they will most likely go see the movie even if they don't know the plot.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that a movie becomes one of my favorites due to a specific actor or director. I think that it is a combination of many things. Some being the writing or special effects. Movies that are my all time favorites have quality theme, plots, and the climax comes just at the right time. I think that it is naive to believe that on particular actor could make a movie a favorite, because honestly not everything they have performed in could be a hit.

ReplyDeleteFor a movie to be good for me it needs to have a good story line and a witty and interesting script. I like movies were screenwriters add deep and moving quotes. I also think actors are very important, a line said by Julia Roberts will be a whole lot better than the same line said by Kristen Stewart. I love movies that have meaning to them it doesn't matter if it is a drama or comedy, if it has good actors and a well written and put together story line, I will like the movie, most likely.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes a movie memorable for me is when it's unpredictable. Everyone knows in your typical romantic comedy the girl ends up with the guy; or in a horror film the ending has everyone surviving; or even in mystery/adventure films the characters always solve the mystery. I enjoy films that keep me on edge and keep me asking questions; movies that have twists and sometimes doesn't always end in the happiest way. With that being said, I do also enjoy the classics because, well, they're classic.
ReplyDeleteI think the best movies are the ones with good story-lines, actors, writing, and a good ending message. Writers need to write great scripts that are funny or dramatic (but not over the top) with a good believable (somewhat) storyline to keep the audience interested. Then, the film will need good actors. In my blog, I wrote about actors being critical matches to the writing. If they can't deliver the lines well, people won't want to hear them. For example, "Horatio" from C.S.I. Miami delivers his lines in the most dramatic way, and usually they are pretty lame lines. This usually just makes me laugh, and then change the channel. The director needs to help guide the actors so they can bring the most out of the writers work. When combined, these parts can form really great movies.
ReplyDeleteA movie has to have a good plot and story line to be one of my favorites. Other than that I like a witty movie that always keeps you thinking. I also appreciate a movie in which the characters are unpredictable and the outcome is a surprise. Other than that a movie should have good acting regardless of which actors are in the film.
ReplyDeleteAs you all may already know my favorite movie is Jaws. Everything about it is just so memorable and it is an often quoted movie. Robert shaw's Captain Quinn was remarkable and one of the best film characters ever.
ReplyDeleteMaking a movie great is something that a great director does as he picks the perfect actors for each role as well choosing every detail of every set. He must know how to direct his actors in order to portray the role that they are playing. There must be continuity in the film. A great film rides mostly on the director shoulders.
ReplyDeleteI personally love comedy movies. The ones I enjoy the most are the ones that has a group of actors that were stars in a pervious movie. One example could be Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who have both been in "Hot Fuzz", "Shawn of the Dead", and "Paul" together. I think i like these kind of movies because its easier to see the two as true comedic friends in the movie and not some random actors a director tried to mix together.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why my favorite movies are my favorites is because first the graphics, second the characters, and third the story line. I like movies with a hint of funny things to it. I am also highly impacted by quotes from movies. Another reason why I like movies is because of their themes, and how much I can learn from them.
ReplyDeleteI am a movie junkie! I have watched about a million movies in my lifetime and I can honestly never pick a favorite. Of course, there are some that I favor more than others, but to choose just one is nearly impossible. Movies that tend to emotionally move me or leave me thinking are the ones I like best. It also depends on what mood I am in. Along with the director and writers, I think the actors are an important factor as well. For example, everyone was looking forward to seeing "The Vow" with Rachel McAdams (my favorite actress and star of The Notebook) and Channing Tatum (star of Dear John and Step Up). To have such great actors that have already starred in two of the most romantic movies made so much hype for a movie that wasn't even all that great. I always tend to predict every ending of every movie and if there is one that I get wrong, it usually ends up going on my favorites list.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I am not sure what part of a movie makes me love it in the end. I am simply going to go with the actors as well. Even if a movie has a fantastic plot, it will be horrible if the actors do not portray the characters as they should.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between an okay movie and an awesome movie is how the plot is presented. In a movie, timing is everything. The way particular events in the movie are presented can make the difference between a good movie or a bad movie. Also, to me, animated films tend to catch my attention a lot more due to the large amount of things that can be done with them, unlike films with human actors that limit the creativity of some scenes.
ReplyDeleteMovies are great, no matter what kind of genre they are. I usually don't care about actors, anybody can pretend to do something in front of a camera, so I really do no have any special preferences of a favorite actor. Things that make a movie great for me are what I call the big three: Comedy, Action, Suspense.
ReplyDeleteThe most important thing for me in a movie has to be the story line, and the acting has to bee good as well. I can never pick which movie is my all time favorite; my favorite movie genre is probably comedy
