Summer Time

http://static.desktopnexus.com/thumbnails/85590-bigthumbnail.jpg

Okay so we all know our first year in college is coming to an end. It is now spring semester with only a few weeks left of school. How exciting right!? Everyone is starting to stress about finals and making sure his or her grades are in good shape. It seems like everyone is just studying for the finals too. My weekends and weekdays have been consumed with studying (especially chemistry) and that’s about it. Yes I still have time to go out and do fun and exciting things but my grades are my top priority right now. And I don’t know about you guys but my motivation has become one thin line.

Our G.P.A is a very important number and basically will either make you or brake you. If your G.P.A is fairly low, say goodbye to FSU! With that in mind, taking five classes and them not being easy has really taken a toll on my G.P.A this semester. One way to help rebuild your G.P.A up is taking summer classes. Taking summer classes can help you get ahead in your major too. Also if you know you have a hard class ahead of you, you could take that hard class or classes over the summer. I think that’s a great idea because you won’t have to worry studying on top of you other three classes. You can spend all you time on your one hard class, therefore making a better grade. Another thing too is, since you took the hard class over the summer, your fall schedule wont be as stressful. And who doesn’t want a non-stressful schedule? I know I do!

The only bad thing about taking summer classes is losing a big chunk of your summer, which is a bummer. Summertime is meant to be with your friends, being carefree, and going to awesome pool parties at West 10. School is not supposed to be on your mind because you spent the last ten months in school and studying your brains off. But if you slack off during the school year, you have to pay the consequences. And the consequence of slacking off is summer classes. This summer I plan on taking chemistry 2 and retake statistics. I chose to take chemistry 2 this summer because I know it will be hard and want to get it out of the way because the next chemistry class I have to take is organic. And the only thing on my mind about chemistry is, the faster I get it done the better! This year statistics has really taken a toll on me. My instructor was and is awful therefore I don’t understand one damn thing!

So my question to the class is, do you think taking summer classes is a good idea and what are the advantages/disadvantages? Do you plan on taking summer classes? Why or why not?

I hope you guys have an awesome weekend! J

  1. I think the question of whether or not summer classes are a good or bad thing really depends on the person. For example, summer classes would be great for me because I live here in Tallahassee, but for someone who lives out of state, they probably wouldn’t like it very much. I am signed up for summer classes because I want to get ahead on my majors, but to be honest, I didn’t want my entire summer gone. So I signed up for a summer term that’s only half the summer semester. Yeah, the classes are every day, but they’re only an hour and fifteen minutes, which really isn’t that bad, since it’s only for seven weeks. But for people who want to go the entire summer, most of the classes are shorter and only three times a week. So really, summer classes really depend on the individual person. I think summer classes are a great idea and they help me to focus all of my attention on a few classes, making my fall and spring semesters easier. But for some people, this may be a huge waste of time, because most of us really don’t want to be in school during the summer.

  2. I think taking summer classes is the best thing you can do because it saves you time, and also it allows you to take the hard classes without having to worry about 4 more other classes. I am a Biochemistry major so I plan to take Calc1 and Bio2 over the summer, that way I wont have to worry about those hard classes in the Fall for a longer period of time. I can graduate earlier if I take summer classes, and also have more time to get ready for grad school.

  3. I think summer classes are definitely useful. I will not be taking them this year because I will be going on vacation with my family. However i plan on taking summer classes next year. It will help to relieve some of the load from the fall and spring semesters.

  4. Taking summer classes has many advantages. The only disadvantages that I can think of are that one would miss out on other summer plans. For me, this presents a problem, because I will be working at my summer camp for the entire summer this year. It is a great idea to get harder or more time consuming courses out of the way over the summer, and I might take a session off of camp next year to do so. Also, depending on how many credits you came to FSU with as a freshman, you may have to take a summer session or two to complete all your credits.

  5. I think summer classes are a good thing because they are usually more laid back and can make some of the harder classes a little bit easier. I also think that they are good because a lot of them you can take and be done with in six weeks instead of having to take them for a whole fall or spring semester. I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to take classes this summer or go home and work. I've had some confusion with my milestones so I'm trying to get that figured out first.

  6. Summer classes are a good thing by getting ahead in your major and having enough time to focus on a few classes versus four or five. However, to my understanding, bright futures does not cover the cost of summer classes which is a bummer for me. But I still decided to take summer classes but through TCC so that it is cheaper (or so I hope). I want to get all my prerequisites out of the way to focus on my major.

  7. i think it is a good idea because I plan on taking classes over summer. An advantage of doing this could be either getting ahead in classes, or creating a buffer just incase you fail a class and need to stay on track.

  8. I think taking summer classes is a good idea for several reason. One, like you said, you get ahead and build up your GPA. Two, you don't lose the rhythm of studying you had mastered during fall and spring. In high school, when I would go back to school after 3 months of being a lazy bum, I couldn't remember much of what I learned the year before. I plan on taking summer classes too, and I'm hopefully going to get Computer Programming I out of the way.

  9. I really don't care for summer classes. But since I started attending florida state in the spring, I'm obligated to take at least one summer session before I graduate...which sucks. However, Summertime is one of the best time to register for classes you otherwise couldn't get into as a freshman. Since I'm an English major, I have to take 3 creative writing workshops in order to graduate with the focus in "creative writing." These classes are extremely hard to get into unless you're a junior and even then, if they don't think you're good enough, you won't get in. So summer session will eventually save my life and because it's an obligation, I can't really say no ;)

  10. I will not be taking summer classes unless I fail one of my classes this semester. I look at summer classes as a fall back option. Overall I think they are a good idea if you want to get ahead. However, I find no reason to get ahead because my major is a four year one and I am right on track.

  11. I am not taking summer classes, even though I probably should. I am choosing to work this summer to save money to pay for things like an apartment and food during the year so that I am not a homeless, starving student. My major is also pretty demanding during the year so instead of a few classes a day and partying all night, I spend from about 8am to 4 pm in classes and then the rest of the day in rehearsals. Life as a dance major is both mentally and physically exhausting, so I use my summers as a chance to breathe and prepare myself for the year ahead.

  12. This summer i am not taking summer classes but i do plan on taking next summer. I do believe that they help out a lot if you want to graduate early or take extra classes to make sure youre not falling behind. I plan on taking summer classes so that i do stay on top of my schedule and because of the fact that my major does take a few years to complete i really do not want to fall behind.

  13. Of course it’s a good idea. It doesn’t necessarily have to be just to get ahead, but taking summer school classes could mean just staying on tract. You can better yourself academically by spacing out your classes. It will give you the opportunity to focus more on your harder classes. You also get your classes over within a third of the time. Yes some people will complain that it takes up our summer, but technically we have close to three months of summer. I do plan on taking summer classes this summer and I probably will for the entire time that im in college.

  14. I think summer classes are an awesome idea if you need to catch up in your four year plan to graduate or simply retake a class to improve your grade. There are lots of advantages to taking summer classes, who doesn’t want to study by the pool!? Usually the summer load is much lighter than you would take in spring or fall so you can focus on your classes more (hopefully) making good grades to bring your GPA up. A disadvantage is the shortened time you are given to learn the material. So you may have chem 1 and another BS class but all of that chemistry is shoved into a few short weeks rather than an entire semester. I think I plan on taking summer classes; I need to catch up with the pre requisites for my major which I haven’t even declared yet. Perfect.

  15. I think it is a good idea. For those that are staying in Tallahassee this summer, why not take a couple of easy classes to get out of the way and to boost your GPA. Personally I am not taking summer classes because I plan to work the entire summer, but in the future I do plan on taking summer classes.

  16. I think the option of summer classes is a fantastic idea. If you are already here you might as well take a refresher course or just a course to help bump up your gpa. I am not taking classes this summer but I wish I was and I am going to take some summer classes in the feature.

  17. summer classes are a good idea because you get to just take one or two and its easy and fun during the summer!! you can get ahead while everyone is taking a break!

  18. Summer classes are a good and bad thing for me. The good is that I can get ahead in my major without stressing over too many classes. The bad is that staying in tally over summer would make me have to go to mandatory soccer workouts that are miserable and hard. I chose to go home this summer but unfortunately I will have to attend summer school next year in order to catch up on my classes. I have changes my major three times already so I 'm a little behind on my milestone requirements.

  20. I think summer classes are a good idea for some people. You can either take easy require classes or hard classes. Either way it's nice. I'm not taking summer classes because I was able to bring in enough credits from high school to not have to but I think a summer in Tally would be fun.

  21. I think taking summer classes is a great idea for the reason you listed. I was thinking of taking summer classes and getting some of my sciences or maths out of the way so that won't be a load on top of my other work, but I want to get a job this summer. I don't have much time during the school year so I'd rather have a job now, and try to spread my workload in the fall. I also want to see all of my old high school friends, and most of my extended family lives right around my city so that's another plus to going home. Also, in the fall my dad may be going to do a tour in Afghanistan as an Army doctor, so I want to spend some time with him before he leaves again. I want to take summer classes, but this summer isn't good timing.

  22. I think summer classes are a great idea. Taking courses over the summer can get your boring core classes out of the way so that you can spend your time during the year really focusing on what you want to do once you get out of college. You might even be able to graduate a little early if you were really determined.

  23. Summer classes are a great idea. I believe that summer classes are a good way to either get easy required classes out of the way or it could be a good way to get the more difficult math and science classes out of the way. The shorter term and greater number of classes per week may work better for some. I believe that I may be more successful in summer session and look forward to the change of pace.

  24. I think it is a great idea. FSU is blessed with a long summer and taking classes to graduate earlier is a good, productive way to spend it. However, I am from South Carolina and I will be spending my summer there instead of Tallahassee because I have an entire life at home I need to get back to.

  25. Summer classes are a great idea as, like you said, they boost your GPA and can let you get ahead in your major. Losing a piece of your summer is a small price to pay for those big gains. I do not plan on taking summer classes this summer as i will be working all summer in order to pay for school next year.

  26. I think summer classes are a great idea with a ton of advantages. I plan on taking summer classes this year to boost my GPA due to a slip up last semester. By taking them I will be able to balance out my GPA and not have to change majors.

  27. Depending on the person, I believe summer classes is a good thing. As you said, it gives a person the ability to finish a class without the stress of other classes, and they would have a better chance of actually speaking with their professor. The disadvantage would be having to learn a semester's worth of work in a shorter amount of time.
I do not plan to take summer classes, mostly due to the fact that I will not be as motivated as I should.

  28. I think it’s a great idea to take summer classes, but it also depends on the person. In my opinion, its more beneficial than not; you get to focus on a harder class while getting some credits out of the way. It does suck that we have to go to school when we should be having a break from it. However, I don't really see it as all that bad because Summer is close to four months and you don't necessarily need to take courses all throughout those four months; you can choose to take six weeks or twelve. I do plan on taking summer classes back home in Miami. My worst subject would have to be science, so I would like to get that out of the way in a community college where it is slightly easier. The only downfall is that classes over the summer come out of your pocket, so choose wisely.

  29. Taking summer classes is a great idea, in my opinion. You get to get rid of harder classes more easily because of the less amount of workload that is usually taken in the summer term. I am planning on taking physics in the summer because it is known to be a very hard class. Its an easy way to save the stress of taking hard classes along with a bunch of other classes, and I think its a great idea, which is why I'm going to take at least two summer terms. Best of all, I don't have to go back down south, where there is almost nothing to do.

  30. I think taking summer classes are a great idea if you are behind or you just want to make up some extra credits. Personally, I am taking one summer class back at home to make up for a class that I dropped this semester. I think that summer really should be for working and researching things for your future career, not taking classes.

  31. I think taking summer classes are a good idea if you want to catch up on some classes. If you are staying in Tallahassee I think it's good idea to take advantage of this opportunity and take some summer classes
