Before I Die

In New Orleans, a lady named Candy turned the outside of this abandoned house in her neighborhood into an interactive work of art. Candy lost a loved one and it turned her head to thoughts of her own life and death, what would she want out of it? She was also curious to see what others wanted out of their lives. She made the side of this house into a giant blackboard and paint stenciled the words "Before I die..." in rows with an open line beside the unfinished sentence. Pieces of chalk lie along the side walk, waiting for people to pick it up and write what they desire to before they die. The answers left range from humorous hopes, occupational ambitions and deep wishes of personal fulfillment. The wall reveals the deep desires of people who wish for this one thing to happen while they are still on this earth. People of all ages, ethnicities and social classes have stopped to unveil what they want to accomplish before their time runs out.
Some examples of things that have been written on the wall include, "not live an average life", "tell my mother that I love her", "be someone's cavalry", "know true joy", "find Atlantis" and "be completely myself". The individuals who have written on this wall are letting their insecurities be known and letting their hope come through. Having their wish on a wall, open to the world, but anonymously is a wonderful gift to those who write on it. It is also a gift to those who seethe words and are inspired by them.
When I saw the website for this wall, it got me thinking about my life, what I have done and what I want to do while I am still here. I do believe in life after death, but I realize that there are some things that can only take place on earth and the relatively short time that I have here. Examples of things that went through my head were in four categories. First I thought of my personal life. I know that before I die, I want to have a family of my own. Then I thought about my career goals and how I would love to dance professionally or be a curator for a theater New York. Then my mind was filled with all sorts of silly little things, some possible and some that are not. Some examples are trying every flavor of Ben and Jerry's, climbing Mt.Everest, visit every continent, and master levitation. I also have some cheesy things like seeing worldwide peace, being able to forgive and be forgiven, live with complete abandonment and to not care what other people think.
I hope that you will take time to look at the website and see all the many very touching, humorous and inspiring things that people have written. Look at the wall and then ponder to yourself the things that you want out of your life before you die. When you have your list, sort it out into the things that you have control over and the things that you do not. I would then invite you to take charge and make the things that you can control before your time is up. I have lost loved ones and have wondered what they could have done or what they would have done differently if they just had a little more time. Looking at this wall really made me take a step back and evaluate what I want out of life, I hope it does the same for you.
As far as responses go, just tell us about your bucket list. What do you want to do before you die?

  1. Before I die, I want to have a family, and to travel to Bora Bora with my entire family. I want to have a really big house, and I want to become a professional so that I can make enough money to start a type of outreach community service group. I also want to have a horse barn and a lot of rescue animals in my house.

  3. There are many things I want to do before I die. As a freshman in college, I feel like I haven't even experienced life yet. I want to be able to travel freely around the world. I want to be able to give back to my camp, give back to others, and give back to the environment. I'd love to teach people and make them feel passionate about something.

  5. I want to graduate college. Get my PhD. Find the love of my life. Have a family. Have my picture taken in every country. Have enough money to build my own house exactly as I imagined it. To read every book on the "100 books to read before you die" no matter how boring they are. To not be afraid to tell my family what I really want to do with my life. To find a career that I love and give it my all. To be happy.

  6. Before i die i want to become successful. I want to be able to live comfortably and have a family and give them all the things I had. I do live a privileged life and i am beyond grateful for that. I do not take it for granted and I am not spoiled about it. My mom worked hard to be where she is today. I want to be able to provide my children with everything i was blessed to have growing up. I want to also travel to many places. The world is so big and there is so much i havent seen. I dont want to die thinking about all the things i missed. Overall i want to be happy before i die, do the things i have always wanted to do.

  8. There are a lot of things to think about with this blog post. I feel for this woman because recently one of my good friend’s older brother, Trent Taylor, died. He went to FSU and it made me think about the people in your life and how you should never take the time on this earth for granted. One of the things on my bucket list is to become a mother. People will typically say that they want to go sky diving or bungee jumping but if you think about it, life is a miracle and to have a child of your own is amazing to me. I want to have a husband and a family and live a long healthy life.

  9. Before I die, I want to live the best Christian life possible. I want to be able to do what is right, be patient with others, love others as I love myself, and be compassionate. I want to make a difference in the world that will be lasting for others who don't know me. I want to be happy and have a successful life, not a successful life money-wise, but successful in the sense of having a family, having time with the people that I love and living life to the fullest.

  10. Before I die I want to make sure I spend enough time with my parents because they've done so much for me. I want to graduate college and score a dream job. Of course, I want to get married and start a family. I also want to visit every single MLB stadium at least once, attend a World Series, go skydiving, and go to a World Cup.

  12. Most of my bucket list is made up of places and trips that I want to go to before I die. I want to go to every continent, and see the 7 wonders of the world. I want to learn to ride a skateboard well, and also I'd love to learn how to wind surf. I also want to sail across Tampa Bay with my friend but hopefully that will happen this summer. I also want to graduate college, with a major that makes me happy, but also gets me a good job I'll enjoy. I want to sky dive and go scuba diving at night at a wreck. I want to get married and have a house, and have kids and take them on a road trip around America.

  13. I want to write as many books as I can think up plots for.
I want to make music daily, record, and produce albums.
One day, I hope to sail around the world with the boat as my home.
I hope to find a nice middle-eastern woman in the heart of the eastern world, perhaps egypt.
And lastly, I hope to discover a place unseen by anyone. There are still places that have been "unadventured" according to the internet, so i'll likely hunt them down and do some journals and cartography.

  14. Before I die I would like to travel all over the world and see all of the sights and sounds of every single continent. I also would like to have a family of my own that I can love and support, as well as the family that I already have. For the most part I want to live life to the fullest and when I'm older be able to say that I love my life and that I have no regrets about anything that I have done throughout it.

  16. I want to visit Japan before I die. I want to be able to see how advanced the technology sphere is in japan for myself. Other than that, my things to do before I die are pretty ordinary. I want to get married to a beautiful woman, make a decent living, have a few kids, and then die in peace.

  17. I haven’t really sat and thought about the things I want to do before I die. I don’t really have a list of things I want to do because if I don’t complete them, I already have so many things in my life to be grateful for. I always see the positive in everything and that’s why it’s not an absolute necessity to complete the stuff on a bucket list (if I made one). I just know that when I am older, I always want to be happy and successful. I always say that someway, somehow I will make my name known. As of right now, I just want to be able to make my parents and myself proud. The adventures along the way like bungi-jumping, skydiving and all the other thrills are all pluses.

  18. Outside of the ordinary, I would really love to travel the world and see different places and experience different cultures. Its interesting to me how people can get stuck in a certain place, when there is a world to discover. It will definitely take me a long time to save up, but i think its worth it.

  20. There are so many things I want to do and so many places I want to see before I die. If I could travel one place before I die I would want to go diving on the reefs of Indonesia. Other that I would really like to visit some of the small south pacific islands and atolls, to experience the unique cultures largely unknown to the western world. Other than that I would love to become certified to sky dive solo. As a personal goal, I have always wanted to learn Arabic, and would like to learn it before I die.
