Looking Back

So this will be our last week of blogs. The school year is finally coming to a close. As I thought of a subject for my blog I began to reminisce over all the things we covered in such a short span of time. As I looked at each essay I thought of how quickly we learned and created them. We learned many different styles and when to use them.

We started with the snapshots. This essay style allowed us to learn different ways to tell a story. Then we learned how to create a research paper. This style of essay can be used to make and support an argument. The last essay we completed showed us how to analyze a text and give our own interpretation. This is not including our blogs or our free writes. These styles of writing are all very different and used for different mediums and audiences.

I am not a very strong writer but found that I enjoyed some styles of writing such as the research paper and the free writes. I however dreaded some styles of writing as well. The analysis paper on a text of our choice sounded easy until I started it. I found it very hard to avoid summarizing and adding my own opinion. I know now I do not like analysis and will probably have to put more time in to that style of essay.

So now that it’s over looking back, which style of writing appealed to you the most? Which styles of writing are you hoping to avoid as you continue through college? Why or why not?

  1. I liked the last style of writing the most. It i easier to write because it is basically your opinion. There is no right or wrong information, just analysis of something you care about or enjoy. It gives a different opinion/insight into something that someone may have never noticed before.

  2. I really enjoyed the creative non-fiction, like the article paper we wrote. We were able to take facts and turn them into an interesting story for a specific argument, and then edit that into a magazine style. I also enjoy the snapshots, because we were able to write about our own personal experiences. It's easy for me to write about things in my life because I can become passionate about them, and I don't find it hard to write at length about them. I enjoy every type of writing, though, as long as I can get interested in what I am writing about.

  3. The style of writing that I liked the most was actually the analysis one. I liked having a concrete thing that I was looking at, and it was a very small piece of text. I don’t like looking at a much broader picture as much as I like the finite details. But what I think I liked the most about it was that I could really put myself in my work. I don’t like the research papers that don’t let you use the cursed “I” and where you have to keep yourself at a cold distance from the reader. Whenever I wrote research papers I always felt pompous because you aren’t allowed to be on casual terms with the audience, I always felt like you had to be on superior terms with them, which I didn’t like. The unfortunate thing is that while I hate the research style of writing, that’s the one that I encounter more throughout college and my career.

  4. I enjoyed the analysis paper. It gave us the opportunity to explore things we already loved but we learned more about them. We got to dissect and really dig deep and find all the possible meanings. For example i did a song, i analyzed the lyrics and really found the meaning behind the song, or at least how it influenced me. I hope to be able to analyze more things in the future. I also learned a lot of little grammar rules that i look for in all of my papers in any class that i didnt know before.

  5. I liked doing the snapshots because we were able to be very personable and its easy to write about events that happened in your life. A gordon rule class isn't normally fun but when we are able to write about topics that interest us it makes it more enjoyable.

  6. Honestly as soon as I am done with my Gordon rule classes I hope I never have to write another essay ever again. I liked writing the snapshots because it was the easiest thing to write about. There was no analyzing my life, it was just writing about my experiences. English isn’t my best subject either but I know how to get through a class and hopefully pass with a good grade. I don’t think there was any particular writing style that I thought was hard (because English is difficult anyway), but let’s just say im happy that im a science major.

  7. The style of writing that appealed most to me was the snapshot essay. I enjoyed it because I ended up writing a poem which I never thought I could do. I didn't even realize it was a poem at first. I also enjoyed the free writes because it allowed us to briefly experiment with other styles of writing. I wish I could avoid writing in general. There is always something wrong with my writing and I don't enjoy it. I like researching, but dread writing research papers and I struggle with analysis. I tend to summarize what I've read and tell facts with little bits of my opinion.

  8. I really didn't like the snapshots only because we were graded on our own personal experiences and style of story telling and in my opinion, the strength/weakness of such a paper is subjective and doesn't really deserve to be graded academically. I like the article paper because we were giving the freedom to choose our own topic and I was able to choose a topic that I am passionate about and managed to make a hell of a paper out of it.

  9. I truly enjoyed doing the snapshots writing the most this past semester. The one typr of writing I hated was the research paper, whcih is at a loss for me since I know many more are waiting for me in the feauture

  10. I enjoyed writing the snapshots paper because almost all of the papers I have written in high school were analysis papers so the snapshots gave me a chance to do something I don't normally get to do. I'm not great at story telling so the snapshot paper was a challenge but still enjoyable, and I found it much more fun than regular analysis papers. I don't look forward to writing more analysis papers but that's unavoidable....

  11. Even thought on my first paper I received a B+, I thought the first paper's style was my favorite. I always loved writing non-fiction pieces that had a little fiction bent style. My least favorite was probably the last paper considering I felt I had to hold strongly to "research paper" language. Most of the last paper was trying to sounds smart and consistant with my thesis; I generally hate feeling restricted like that. As an English major, I hope I find teachers with as much versatility as this class held. Though it was only 1000 level, it was probably my hardest class this semester.

  12. I liked doing the snap shots. I could write pretty much whatever and did not have much restrictions. I don't look forward to doing research papers. I hate them with a passion. To me, all research papers are boring and when a topic is boring, I have a hard time writing.

  13. I loved the analysis writing. Reason being, I love creativity, and the analysis paper really allowed me to do some critical thinking to come up with some legit ideas. I'm hoping to avoid writing about my life again, because that was the paper that i wrote at least once every single year for some class. I am the kind of writer that gets bored very easily, and having to actually think makes the assignment all the more fun

  14. The style of writing that I enjoyed the most throughout the semester was definitely the research paper. Research papers were never that difficult for me because I was always able to engage the audience and persuade them easily into my point of view. Since my topic was interesting, I was more intrigued to write about it and find out shocking details. However, I am sure that if I were to have a horrible topic, my experience wouldn't be as pleasant. I also enjoyed, despite how long it took me to perfect it, the way we were able to turn our research paper into a magazine. Although it was time consuming, I enjoyed the outcome of it.
There was not a paper I really hated doing, but I wasn't too fond of the snapshot essay. Many people may find it easier to write about a personal experience, but for me, it was difficult to put my story into words. I'm not that good at describing things very clearly on paper, therefore, this paper was more of a challenge for me.

  15. I definitely enjoy creative writing the most. Our snapshot paper was my favorite assignment. I enjoyed having the freedom to write about whatever you want and let your mind go. I definitely have a hard time with research based assignments. Honestly, i find it very boring and tedious. And because I don't like researching, it is really difficult for me to connect to the assignment and produce something that's "A" worthy.

  16. The style of writing I enjoyed most was the first creative writing project. The fact that our snapshots were personal experiences that are important in our lives made writing that much easier. This project allowed me the freedom to compose each snapshot from a suitable point of view. As a result I was able to let my mind go, flashing back to these experiences, and adding all the description my mind could muster.

  17. I personally liked the snapshots writing piece the most. I liked the pace of a quick moments into one and out into another. It kept the story flowing and was easier to write because I wouldn't get stuck on any thought too long. One type of writing I would like to avoid in college is research papers, I have never been to fond of those.

  18. I enjoyed the snapshots because you can write exactly how you feel and the story pretty much just flows as you are writing. I absolutely hated the analytical paper as i find this style of writing confusing and difficult.
